RETURN OF FILM ``LE BAL`` TO THE SCREEN OF AZERBAIJAN
On May 17, Azerbaijan Cinema hosted a screening of Italian director Ettore Scola’s film “Le Bal” (1983) as part of a series of screenings “Masterpieces of Forgotten World Cinema” organized by Azerbaijan Union of Filmmakers.
Before the screening, the moderators of the event – film critic Sevda Sultanova and director Ilgar Guliyev gave brief information about the film and author. S.Sultanova informed the participants about the remarkable moments of life and work of director.
Sharing her views on why Skola is less popular than other famous Italian directors, Sultanova indicated author`s more realistic and poetic films than other compatriots as main reason.
Noting the uniqueness of image and music of the film “Le Bal”, S.Sultanova emphasized E.Scola has won numerous awards at prestigious festivals throughout his career. Guliyev, in turn, expressed his views on the structure of the film. According to him, Scola’s film depicts thirty-year history of France, as well as a metaphor for human life on earth. The film focuses particularly on the impact of historical events on people, music, thought, fashion and especially people’s attitudes towards each other. Nominated for an Oscar in 1984, the film is well known to the older generation. Despite the fact that almost forty years have passed since its premiere, the film aroused interest of modern Azerbaijani audiences.
