TENGIZ ABULADZE'S ``PENANCE`` WAS SCREENED DEDICATED TO HIS 100TH ANNIVERSARY

On February 20, Azerbaijan Union of Filmmakers organized the screening of “Penance” by Tengiz Abuladze within the framework of the “Masterpieces of World Cinema in Azerbaijani” project. Additionally, 2024 is also the 100th anniversary of this world-known film director.

The film, which is considered psychological drama, is the last film of the director’s trilogy (“The Plea”, “The Wishing Tree”, “Penance”). The film which was produced in 1984, made as a philosophical tale about a tyrant and a creative individual, won 3 awards including Cannes International Film Festival`s Grand Prix of the jury in 1987. People’s Artist of the USSR Hamlet Khanizade dubbed the film, which was warmly welcomed by the audience. As in all his films, the author poses serious philosophical questions to the audience in “Repentance”, invites a dialogue on “Artist and power”, “Tenet and sacrifice”.

A copy of the film, dubbed into Azerbaijani, was presented by Azerbaijan State Film Fund.

Within the framework of the “Masterpieces of World Cinema in Azerbaijani” program, the films “20 Days Without War” by Aleksei German and “The ascent” by Larisa Shepitko is considered to be screened during the year.
