AZERBAIJANI FILM PARTICIPATES IN THE COMPETITION FOR ``GOYA`` AWARDS FOR THE FIRST TIME

Ilgar Najaf’s fiction film “Sughra and Sons” participates in the competition for the prestigious “Goya” awards in the “Best European Film” category. This is the first in the history of Azerbaijani cinema. The film was submitted to the competition by Azerbaijan Union of Filmmakers. This award was established by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Spain (Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas de España) and along with “Oscar”. “BAFTA”, “Cesar”, is one of the most prestigious film awards presented by the Film Academy. Prominent film directors such as Alejandro Amenabar, Pedro Almodovar, Carlos Saura have won this award.

Additionally, Ilgar Najaf’s film “Sughra and Sons” will compete with  “Aftersun”, by  Charlotte Wells (The UK), “Anatomy of a Fall”, by  Justine Triet, (France), “Behind The Haystacks”, by  Asimina Proedrou (Greece), “Foudre” (Thunder)  by  Carmen Jaquier (Switzerland), “Great Yarmouth: Provisional Figures” by Marco Martins (Portugal), “The Eight Mountains” co-directed by  Charlotte Vandermeersch  and  Felix Van Groeningen (Italy), “Safe Place” by  Juraj Lerotić (Croatia), “The Teachers’ Lounge” by  Ilker Çatak (Germany) and “The Last Ashes” by  Loïc Tanson (Luxembourg) in the category of Best European Film.

“Sughra and sons” which had its world premiere at Busan International Film Festival (South Korea), was screened at prestigious cinemas in India, Switzerland, the United States and Germany, and was nominated for the “Asia and Pacific Film Academy” (Asia “Oscar”) award in the “Best Screenplay” category.

Starring actors are Gunash Mehdizadeh, Ilgar Jahangir, Rasim Jafar, Aydan Hasanzadeh along with child actors Humbat Ahmadzadeh, Pasha Mammadli. The film was written by Ilgar Najaf, Asif Rustamov and Roelof Jan Minnebo (Netherlands), cinematography by Ayhan Salar (Germany), a member of the European Film Academy, and sound directing by Michael Menzke (Germany).
